Light Punches, Then Power: A Heavy Bag Round on Video

Most people hit the bag at one speed: as hard as they can until they’re gassed, then a long rest. The Shadow Boxing App is a boxing workout app that runs your rounds and calls out what to do, and one of its bag exercises is built to break that habit. This short clip shows it in action: the boxer keeps the hands going with light, non-stop punches, then the app calls a combo and they sit down on it with full power before dropping back to light work.

The idea comes straight from the gym. A coach will tell you to stay busy on the bag between hard shots instead of standing there resetting, because that’s how a real round goes. You don’t get to pause. The light punches keep your rhythm, your breathing, and your feet moving; the hard combo is where you commit. Switching between the two is harder than it looks, since most of us tense up as soon as we start throwing and never relax again. In the app this is the Punching Bag (speed) exercise, and it sits alongside the explosiveness work in the bag section, which got a big update a few weeks ago.

If you have a bag at home, try a round of this. Put the phone where you can hear it, keep the hands moving, and save the power for when the app asks for it. The app is free to try, so download it and give it a go.
