Hit and Don't Get Hit: The Step In, 1-2, Step Out Drill on Video
The Shadow Boxing App is a boxing coach that runs from your phone: it calls out punches, defenses, and footwork during a round, and you answer with your body instead of reading a screen. This short video shows one of the simplest drills in the app, filmed in a real gym with the app overlaid on the clip. The boxer is working a heavy bag, six rounds into a sixteen-round session, and the callout on screen is the entire lesson: step in, 1-2, step out.
The drill sounds trivial and it is not. Most people who learn to punch learn to do it standing still, at whatever range they happen to be. In a real exchange you are almost never at the right distance when you want to throw, so the punch has to travel with you: close the gap, land the jab and cross, and leave before anything comes back. The bag makes this concrete, because you can feel whether the 1-2 landed at the right range or whether you were still a step short. Hit and don’t get hit, which is the oldest advice in boxing and the hardest to actually do. We went into the mechanics of getting out after you land in the article on building up to 1-2-Step Back-2; this drill is the version where you also have to get in first.
Watch the feet. The step in is small, the 1-2 lands on the bag at the top of it, and the step out starts before the cross has fully come back. Then the boxer resets out of range and waits for the next call. Repeated across a full round, this becomes automatic, and it carries straight into sparring. The app is free to try, so download it, put your phone where you can hear it, and run this one for a couple of rounds.
